387204 03: A gas flare owned by Shell burns March 24, 2001 in the delta region of Nigeria. The flare was lit in the early 1970s and has burned continuously ever since. The US Supreme court cleared the way March 26, 2001 for the parent companies of Shell to be sued in New York for allegedly instigating the murder of Ogoni activist Ken Saro-Wiwa in Nigeria by a former Nigerian military government. The case, filed in 1996 in federal court in Manhattan, was brought by the family of executed activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, who led opposition to Royal Dutch/Shell Group's oil exploration activities in the Ogoni region of Nigeria. The lawsuit alleged that Shell Petroleum Development Co. of Nigeria took land for oil development without paying adequate compensation and then polluted the region's air and water.
