How rich America made up whiteness

Donald Trump’s divisive campaign for president has galvanized white nationalists this election season (case in point: He secured an endorsement from the Ku Klux Klan). So, all this white pride got us thinking: What makes someone white, anyway? Who gets to call themselves white and reap the privileges of whiteness? As it turns out, most white people today couldn’t have called themselves white earlier in American history.

Fusion correspondent Anna Sterling breaks down how America came to define whiteness, and how it distracts us from perhaps the most harmful division of all.
