U.S. v Nigeria in GIFs

Moving pictures from the U.S. national team’s final World Cup warmup

anthem

I thought there might be a joke here about the Germans not singing the anthem, but then I noticed that Jozy isn’t singing either. Beasley’s lips are moving but he’s not actually singing.

Howard 100

Tim Howard joined Tony Meola and Joe-Max Moore on 100 caps. If he plays against Ghana, he’ll equal Earnie Stewart’s 101. If he plays the next game, against Portugal, he’ll tie Kasey Keller with 102. Let’s assume that Clint Dempsey (105) plays in all U.S. games; if the U.S. makes it all the way to the final, Howard will have 107 caps, overtaking Eric Wynalda for 10th most caps all-time.

Clint Dempsey’s backheel looks careless, but a shallower run from Altidore might have prolonged the sequence.

Howard punches the ball off the goal line. Sitting in the stands, I wondered why they were playing with a yellow ball on a clear summer evening. Now I’m wondering why they weren’t playing with a Brazuca to mimic conditions in Brazil.

Altidore goal

Fabian Johnson made a nice run to the end line. Jozy’s movement was decent, his marker made it easy.

giphy-5

A goal line save that Howard would not have had to make if anyone had bothered to pick up the free man in the box during the corner kick.

giphy-6

I’m really liking the Geoff Cameron-Matt Besler partnership in the back. Here Cameron does just enough to disrupt a header on goal.

giphy-7

Here’s the old Dempsey dancing his way into the box. Should he have passed to Altidore? I’d have shot, too.

giphy-8

The first time I saw a replay of this goal, I thought it was a little soft. The goalkeeper really cheated to the far post. But Jozy’s showed some nice control and composure in the box, cutting to the inside and brushing off the challenge. And then he put it away with a very confident shot.
