It’s certainly not the trivia question you want to be known for: which World Cup-winning captain and former world player of the year went to prison for taking a dip in his pool?
Fabio Cannavaro, the 41-year-old former Juventus and Italy great, has been sentenced to ten months in prison for breaching an order to keep out of a property that was seized by authorities, who have been investigating him for alleged tax evasion.
In October, Cannavaro’s Naples villa had been seized for suspected breaches of building regulations, such as failing to get planning permission for various improvements. But apparently he, his wife Daniela Arenoso, and his brother Paolo — who plays for Serie A side Sassuolo — just couldn’t resist the siren’s song of Fabio’s pool. Perhaps authorities should have suspected this family might bend the rules a bit?
All three have appealed and have had their sentences suspended until a final judgment is made. Which is handy for the former center back, since he’s the head coach of Chinese side Guangzhou Evergrande.
Cannavaro has practice at being in prison, sort of: he played an inmate in a 2008 short film, Because There Are Things You Never Forget.
