What is victory but an abstract distinction based on the perceived value of one outcome compared to another? Why, it’s a reason for you to hate your soccer team’s front office, of course, and among the thousands of reasons fans imagine for deploring people they barely know, the win column is one of the more tangible.
But tangible doesn’t mean justifiable. After all, we can tangible ourselves to a positive review of Pitch Perfect 2, but that wouldn’t make it right. So when you hear about Philadelphia Union fans taking to the streets to demand improved results, remember: League soccer is often a zero-sum game.
If you’re entitled to win, that may mean somebody else is entitled to lose, which is mean, sad and negative thought. Don’t be such a bummer, and stop copying fans from across the ocean.
