Party on with gay marriage, Ireland!

CHST Banner

Your recent Memorial Day weekend festivities were likely pretty muted compared to those in Ireland, where voters passed an initiative to approve same-sex marriage.

Seriously, the only people who had a better weekend than gays in Ireland were the headliner writers who finally got to use that pot of gold pun they’d been sitting on for weeks.

Ireland became the 20th country worldwide to legalize same-sex marriage, and the first to do so by a popular vote, with 62 percent in favor. That’s a big cultural evolution in a country where homosexuality was illegal until 1993.

Senator David Norris, a longtime activist, talked about how difficult it had been growing up gay in Ireland in the past, and the massive changes that have occurred in a shorter span of time than “The Simpsons” have been on television.

“There was silence on the subject,” he told the New York Times. “It wasn’t mentioned in the newspapers, it wasn’t mentioned in the broadcast media. Then there was a fear of criminal prosecution, of being involuntarily placed in a lunatic asylum, losing your job, being socially destroyed. It was a terrible situation.

Irish celebrities such as Bono, Hozier and Colin Farrell all publicly expressed their delight with the vote over the weekend, while one of America’s biggest stars succinctly shared her opinion.

Fuck yeah Ireland, indeed.
