Fusion's Jorge Ramos on what he learned covering the 2016 race

It's still illegal for Americans to vacation in Cuba, but they're doing it anyway

For the first time in over half a century, Cuba reopened its embassy in Washington, DC and raised its national flag as the first public display of fully restored diplomatic relations with the US.

Since normalization of relations were announced late last year, Americans have already been traveling to Cuba in record numbers, causing a boom in tourism that shows no signs of slowing down.

“As the forbidden fruit, people want to go where they can’t go,” explains Collin Laverty, President of Cuba Educational Travel. “Estimates show the first year that Americans can travel completely freely to Cuba, there’ll be two million tourists.”

Fusion’s Serena Marshall went to the island to see it for herself.
