The United States locks up more kids than any other developed country, and on any given night, at least 54,000 children will sleep behind bars. Whether it’s for a few nights or a couple years, kids will often face a completely new set of challenges once inside a juvenile jail.
So what do these facilities look like, and what do kids experience once there? Fusion’s Mariana Atencio traveled to juvenile detention centers in Kansas and in Alabama for a closer look at what life is like behind bars for these youth.
