How Detroit Is Using Street Art to Beautify Blight

Detroit has a big problem with urban blight — tens of thousands of empty lots and abandoned buildings. But not far from downtown along one stretch of Grand River Avenue, they’ve figured out how to make blight beautiful.

Derek Weaver, a real estate developer, came up with the idea to turn over walls to street artists, and worked to get building owners’ permission. Now, more than 100 artists have contributed murals across 15 buildings, and it’s helping to remake a whole neighborhood.
