'Cuban Twitter' Created Secretly by the U.S. Government

According to documents attained by the Associated Press, the US Agency for International Development secretly created what is being called the “Cuban Twitter.” The plans were to develop a basic version of Twitter, called ZunZuneo – named after the tweets of a hummingbird – to undermine Cuba’s communist government.

The project lasted over two years, drawing an audience of over 40,000 Cubans, but at no point were its users made aware that it was developed and run by the U.S. government.

Fusion Live spoke to one of the editors of the piece, Associated Press journalist Trish Wilson.
