Jose Antonio Vargas: Undocumented and Unscripted

In 2011, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas wrote a personal and stirring New York Times essay, in which he came out to the world as an undocumented American.

In the piece, “My Life As An Undocumented Immigrant,” Jose describes how he found out about his status, recalls the years of hiding his secret, and explains why in advance of his 30th birthday he decided to share his story.

And he’s continuing to share that story in his new film: “Documented.” Fusion’s Alicia Menendez sat down with the director to ask why he decided to share such a personal intimate journey with the world, what it was like to only be able to see his mother on film and why it’s important that he be the one to tell his own story.
