The Border Patrol Won't Return Congress' Calls

It’s no secret that there are some problems at the U.S.-Mexico border. Even though Congress hasn’t been able to do much of anything when it comes to legislation related to immigration reform, two Congressmen are hoping to change that. Rep. Steve Pearce (R-NM) and Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) came together from across the aisle to sponsor the bipartisan Border Accountability Bill. Their bill will offer better oversight of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

O’Rourke told AMERICA the government needs to exercise more “accountability and oversight over a federal agency that has very unusual police powers when it comes to interrogation, detention and use of force.” Over the years, the border patrol agency has gotten a bad reputation for excessive use of force and accidental killings.

It remains to be seen whether the Customs and Border Protection will be open to more government oversight. So far, it doesn’t look too promising.

“We have asked the border patrol to come in and sit in the office twice in the recent weeks since our bill was introduced. They refuse to return our calls,” Rep. Pearce told us.
