New Hampshire Nerds

Why it's not easy selling Bernie Sanders to black voters

Bernie Sanders has harnessed the energy of young white voters. Young black voters have been a much tougher sell. And Lindsey Burgess, a student at historically black Spelman College who canvasses for Sanders, sees a clear difference between those two groups.

“The fight has always been very, very, very different,” she says. “White progressives tend to focus more within their community, whether it’s white feminism, things affecting them.” Black voters are more skeptical, she says: “You know, what is Bernie going to do for us?”

She also has to fight apathy among black voters about the presidential election. Over the past eight years, she says, “a lot of black people thought that conditions would be better, and we’re still frustrated.”

Burgess, 21, let Fusion tag along as she knocked on doors in Atlanta before the Super Tuesday primary in Georgia. She opened up about why she’s devoting her energy to what can be an uphill climb.
