Working at 'Chelsea Lately:' #NSFW

“Chelsea Lately” writer, Heather McDonald has confirmed what we all suspected was true: working at “Chelsea Lately” is really as crazy as we all thought.

McDonald got the gig back in 2007, when the E! series starring comedian Chelsea Handler, first premiered.

Though McDonald admits that the “Lately” staff really does live up to its unfiltered, unapologetic reputation, there’s another element in the work culture that makes it one of the most successful late-night shows on television.

“Sometimes on late-night shows, you go off by yourself and you write all these jokes… then you see which ones they pick, and you put your initials next to it,” McDonald explained to Fusion’s Alicia Menendez in an interview.

“But for some reason our show just didn’t become that,” she gladly reported. “You get three people on one joke, it’s going to be stronger than one person.”

Collaboration over competition created a culture in which writers felt comfortable enough to showcase the behind-the-scenes antics of the show in the hilarious mockumentary spin-off, “After Lately.”

“All those stories were derived from real things that happened,” McDonald assured Menendez.

“Chelsea Lately” is currently in its final season on the E! Network.
