If you watched the 2014 Emmys, you might have caught Good Wife star Julianna Margulies celebrating her win for best actress in a drama series.
But just a few commercial breaks before her acceptance speech, Bruce Rosenblum, Chairman and CEO of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences asked the very talented Sofia Vergara to stand on a rotating pedestal while he talked about…wait for it…diversity.
Let’s be honest: it is a great time for women in television. Last year speaking roles for women on prime time entertainment shows peaked at 43 percent, and there are lots of awesome women running some of the best shows on TV.
Which is why it’s all the more important that those women who get speaking roles are actually allowed to, you know, speak.
And Sophia Vergara isn’t just any actress — she’s the most prominent Latina actress in the US, and if there is anyone Hollywood loves to objectify-– it’s a spicy Latina.
Luckily because Beyonce has lit a feminist fire under our ass, the internet freaked out and by the time Sofia faced the press, she was asked about the gag.
Yes, women can be funny AND sexy — but that’s not really the point. The point is that Sofia is talented. She’s got market power and great comedic timing, but this bit showcased neither. And she shouldn’t be the only one who has to answer for this retrograde sexist BS. Bruce Rosenblum and the writers of his speech should share in the responsibility.
