Why you need to have more black friends

Robert Jones over at the Public Religion Research Institute made some interesting (and not surprising) discoveries. His recent report published in the Washington Post found that a quarter of white people don’t have a single non-white friend. Shocking, eh?

For every 91 white friends a white person has, they have one black friend. For every 83 black friends a black person has, they have eight white friends. Christopher Ingraham explained the statistical significance: “Blacks have ten times as many black friends as white friends. But white Americans have 91 times as many white friends as black friends.”

Fusion’s Alicia Menendez sat down with the Harvard Lampoon President Alexis Wilkinson and the creator of the “Stuff White People Like” (a blog turned New York Times bestselling book) Christian Lander to talk about what white people need to do to befriend some non-white peeps.

Lander provided his theory on how to assure you never get called out for being a racist. “When you’re looking for diverse friends, one of the rules is: one black friend proves you *might* be a racist. But if you have one friend from every race then you’re legally declared ‘not racist.'”

Wilkinson ruminated on why black people are more capable of making friends outside their own race.

“First of all, black people are generally cooler, so we probably have more friends in general,” Wilkinson said. “We’re just a great people. Why wouldn’t you want to be friends with us?”

She also pointed out that white people are hard to avoid in the working world.

“You can’t get a job without befriending a white person. … Even at McDonald’s you’re going to be working with a white person. You can’t avoid them.”
