USA’s Suits, which airs tonight at 10 p.m. ET, is all about tension. Donna, played by Sarah Rafferty, works as an executive assistant for a top Manhattan law firm—not really a position of power. Well, that’s what you think.
“She seems to wield an unbelievable amount of power at the firm. It’s pretty amazing,” Rafferty told Fusion.
Then there’s the unbelievable tension between Donna and Harvey, played by Gabriel Macht, a partner at the firm. Yes, Donna’s his assistant. And despite—or maybe because of—that power imbalance, things get steamy.
If at least part of that rapport seems realistic, that’s because it comes from real life, Rafferty says. She and Macht have been friends for more than 20 years. “As the series has progressed they’ve taken the dynamic that Gabriel and I tend to have with each other and put that a little bit into Donna and Harvey’s life,” Rafferty said.
The couple keeps viewers on their toes. Are they fighting or flirting?
So it begs the question for viewers: Will Donna and Harvey, well, you know? If Rafferty knows, she’s playing her cards close to her chest.
“Donna thinks it’s a bad idea. She has a very strict boundaries,” Rafferty said. “I think she’s concerned about how a relationship will affect her performance at work and whether she would be able to marry those two things. I also think it’s interesting because I think on some level she questions whether Harvey is a match for her or whether he’s ready for what she’s looking for. I think there’s a lot of reasons for the ‘will they or won’t they’ question.”
Either way, Donna enjoys the perks of a corner office—without actually having one.
“She’s not really feeling like she needs to make a power play for more status at the firm. She feels that she’s arrived there. I will say that any kind of play she’d make would be related to her emotional connection to the relationships in the firm,” Rafferty said. “So, the minute those relationships don’t work for her is the minute she’s going to make a play.”
So is that a relationship hint? Stay tuned. Suits fanatics, check out more inside info on the show before it airs tonight in this interview with Fusion’s Alicia Menendez.
